When temperatures soar, riding can become considerably more demanding for both horse and rider. Choosing the right clothing can make a significant difference to your comfort, concentration and enjoyment, particularly when the thermometer starts climbing. During a heatwave, of course, it’s important to think beyond your own comfort and consider whether riding is appropriate for your horse at all.
When you do ride in hot weather, lightweight and breathable riding clothes should be the starting point. Technical fabrics designed to wick moisture away from the skin can help you stay drier and more comfortable, while materials that allow air to circulate are preferable to heavy, restrictive garments. Look for riding shirts and base layers made with stretch fabrics, as these allow unrestricted movement without adding unnecessary weight.

As mentioned above, it’s tempting to focus entirely on keeping yourself cool, but your horse’s welfare must come first. Horses can become dangerously overheated, particularly during strenuous exercise in high temperatures and humidity. Consider riding during the cooler parts of the day, reduce the intensity and duration of exercise, and always ensure your horse has access to fresh water and opportunities to cool down. If conditions are exceptionally hot, postponing your ride may simply be the safest and most responsible choice.
