Good Saddle Care

Good saddle care: top tips

At WB Equiline, we stock a range of horsewear, including saddle cloths and rugs. Invest in the right accessories and take good care of your saddle.

A quality saddle is one of the most important investments any equestrian will make, so taking proper care of it is essential. Good saddle maintenance not only keeps your tack looking smart and professional but also helps preserve comfort, safety and performance for both horse and rider. With regular attention and the right routines, a well-made saddle can remain in excellent condition for many years.

One of the simplest but most effective habits is cleaning your saddle after every ride. Sweat, dust and dirt can quickly build up on leather, gradually causing it to dry out and deteriorate. Wiping the saddle down with a soft cloth and suitable saddle soap helps remove residue before it has a chance to damage the material. Regular cleaning also gives you the opportunity to check for any wear, loose stitching or other signs of damage that may need attention.

Conditioning the leather is equally important. Leather naturally loses moisture, particularly when exposed to changing weather conditions or frequent use. Applying a decent leather conditioner or balm helps keep the material supple, preventing cracking and extending the life of the saddle. However, it is important not to over-oil the leather, as this can weaken it and alter the saddle’s structure.

Storage also plays a major role in saddle care. Saddles should be kept in a dry, well-ventilated tack room away from direct heat or damp conditions. Excess moisture can encourage mould growth, while heat may dry the leather excessively. Using a saddle cover helps protect against dust and accidental scratches when the saddle is not in use.

Paying attention to fit is another important aspect of care. A saddle that no longer fits the horse correctly can cause discomfort, pressure points and sometimes even behavioural issues. Regular saddle fitting checks are essential, particularly if the horse’s shape changes through work, age or seasonal condition.

Finally, avoid placing your saddle on unstable surfaces or resting it incorrectly, as this can damage the tree and eventually alter its shape. Good saddle care is ultimately about consistency. A few minutes of maintenance after each ride can protect your investment, improve your safety and ensure your saddle continues to provide comfort and support for years to come.
