Good-quality riding clothes are an investment, so it makes sense to look after them properly. Premium equestrian garments are designed to withstand the demands of riding, training and yard life, but a little extra care can help preserve their appearance, performance and longevity. Here are five simple ways to keep your riding wardrobe in excellent condition.
Follow the care label. It may seem obvious, but checking the manufacturer’s washing instructions is one of the best things you can do to care for your riding clothes. Technical fabrics can require specific temperatures or washing programmes, while some garments should never be tumble dried. Following the recommended instructions helps protect stretch, shape, technical finishes and delicate detailing.
Wash riding clothes promptly. Riding can leave clothes covered in sweat, dust, horse hair and stable grime. Don’t leave particularly dirty garments sitting in the laundry basket for days. Washing them relatively promptly can prevent stains and odours from becoming difficult to remove. However, there’s no need to wash every garment after every brief use if it remains clean and fresh.
Treat technical fabrics with care. Many modern riding breeches, shirts and jackets use specialist fabrics designed to provide stretch, breathability, moisture management and other performance benefits. Avoid harsh detergents and fabric softeners unless the manufacturer specifically recommends them, as these can affect technical finishes. Washing similar fabrics together can also reduce unnecessary wear.
Give riding boots and accessories some attention. Riding boots deserve particular care because they’re exposed to mud, water and stable conditions. Remove dirt after use and clean your boots with products suitable for their specific material. Leather equestrian footwear may benefit from appropriate conditioning, while synthetic materials often require a different approach. Riding helmets should also be kept clean, but always follow the manufacturer’s cleaning recommendations and avoid harsh chemicals.
Store everything properly. Don’t simply throw riding clothes into a cupboard after washing. Allow garments to dry completely before putting them away, and hang riding jackets and competitionwear where they can retain their shape. Keep your riding boots somewhere dry and well ventilated, and store your riding helmets safely where they won’t be knocked or crushed.
